Features and Claim Scope
Note
Snapshot: GKX 2.3.0, 2026-09-21, reviewed against 2.4.1 on 2026-09-27. The status of every public number is its row in the evidence ledger, shown on Validation. A claim that is neither in the ledger nor on this page is not made.
The 2.0.0 end-damping regression (issue 192) is fixed by PR 197, which restores the per-step contract and reproduces the recorded artifact bit-identically. Numbers recorded with 2.0.0 time integration still need repaired-build evidence before they are cited, and the GX references behind the provisional linear rows have not yet been regenerated with the per-unit-time end-damping rate (issue 194). The adiabatic Cyclone GX goldens were rerun with a repaired GX build in September 2026 and moved by at most 0.06% above \(k_y=0.1\) (Validation); the ledger rows have not been updated.
Features
What GKX can be asked to do, with the switch that turns each feature on. Input keys are defined in Input Files and Executable; the physics is in Theory and Operators And Terms.

Physics
Any number of kinetic species; adiabatic (Boltzmann) electrons or ions.
Electrostatic, or electromagnetic with \(A_\parallel\) and \(B_\parallel\) (KAW, KBM).
Collision operators (
[time] collision_operator): linearized Landau (default), Lenard-Bernstein/Dougherty, Sugama, improved Sugama, and the gyrokinetic Coulomb operator; see Operators And Terms.Hypercollisions and hyperdiffusion, declared as regularizations.
Twist-and-shift linked parallel boundaries, or periodic.
Linear runs
Initial-value runs with explicit (
rk2,rk4,sspx3), IMEX or backward-Euler GMRES time stepping.Certified Arnoldi on the time-advance map (default), matrix-free Krylov, and shift-invert for a chosen branch; every returned eigenpair is checked against the full operator (Solvers).
k_yscans in serial or across devices, identical to the serial result (Parallelization policy).
Nonlinear runs
Pseudo-spectral \(E\times B\) bracket with the two-thirds rule, in the full or half
k_ylayout ([grid] ky_layout).run_to = "saturation"stops when heat flux, field and free energy are stationary; a missed saturation is reported.Restart from a saved bundle (
[init] init_file), NetCDF output with spectra, fluxes and energies (Saved Outputs and Restart Files).gkx --estimatesizes the grid from the geometry and prints the reason for each entry.
Derivatives and optimization
Implicit derivatives of eigenvalues and eigenvector observables (Differentiable matrix-free eigenmodes).
A checkpointed discrete adjoint of the nonlinear heat flux over a window (Nonlinear automatic differentiation).
Quasilinear heat-flux spectra and their sensitivities (Quasilinear Transport).
Growth-rate, quasilinear and nonlinear objectives in VMEX shape optimization (Stellarator optimization).
Hardware and precision
CPU and GPU through JAX;
float32by default,float64withJAX_ENABLE_X64=true.A persistent compilation cache;
gkx.preparecompiles a nonlinear route once for repeated calls.
